Death is the ultimate mystery
What happens as we are dying? After we die?
Some leave questions like this to saints and poets. Or to their religious authorities. Others don't consider this question worth dwelling on — the answer seems unknowable.
Yet Death, dying and consciousness have been studied scientifically
For example, a renowned research psychiatrist studied the perceptions and experiences of patients dying from chronic illness. He identified a number of milestone experiences that arise on the way to death from chronic illness. A significant percentage of patients experience each of these distinctive milestones. Yet caregivers can view these as abnormal because they are unusual in other settings.
This research informs all caregiving.
